Confusing Verbs & Redundancy


CONFUSING VERBS

Ø     to rise/ rose/ risen/ rising =to get up, move up under one’s own power.
Ø     to arise/ arose/ arisen/ arising =to wake up, to get up
Ø     to raise/ raised/ raising =to lift, bring up
Ø     to lie/ lay/ lain/ lying =to rest, repose or be situated in a place.
Ø     to lie/ lied/ lied/ lying =to say something that is not true.
Ø     to lay/ laid/ laid/ laying =to put somebody/ something on a surface.
Ø     to set/ setting =to put somebody/ something on a surface or in a place.
Ø     to sit/ sat/ sitting =to take a seat


REDUNDANCY

A Sentence in which some information is unnecessarily repeated is called redundant. Given, here are some words combinations that are always redundant, and thus should never be used:-
1. Advance, forward:- Advance means to move in a forward direction, thus the word forward is not necessary.
2. New, innovations:- Innovation means a new idea.
3. Return, back:- Return means to go back, So back is not necessary.
4. Repeat, again:- Repeat means to say again.
5. Sufficient, enough:- The meaning of these two words are same. So one or other should be used.
